What is IECEx Certification?

Developed and managed by an international network of National Certification Bodies from around the world (the IEC), the IECEx Scheme works as a mutual acceptance mechanism for equipment and services intended for use in explosive atmospheres.

IECEx standards can apply to testing and certification for Ex equipment, personnel training and facility assessments. Additionally, it serves as a means for manufacturers, regulators and equipment users in hazardous areas to address the risk of fires and explosions.

Each region and country has its own set of rules and regulations, this could mean extra work, delays and costs for manufacturers when it comes to ensuring equipment compliance in each region.

IECEx Certification Types

An Applus+ Laboratories company, QPS Applus+ is an approved IECEx Certification Body (ExCBs) for equipment and personnel.

IECEx Certification for Products

The IECEx conformity assessment for equipment intended for use in explosive atmospheres provides a cost-effective solution for manufacturers and end users to reach global market access in more than 50 countries.

IECEx Certification for Personnel

This certification enables individuals working in potentially explosive atmospheres to provide independent proof that they have the knowledge and skills necessary to work on, service or install Ex equipment. We were the first Certification Body in North America to be accredited to certify personnel under this Scheme.

What is the difference between ATEX and IECEx certification?

Unlike ATEX certification, which is only recognised in the EU, IECEx Certification for equipment is widely recognised and accepted globally.

Additionally, when it comes to ATEX certification, the manufacturer is in charge of the complete certification process. On the other hand, third-party certification bodies are in charge of ensuring IECEx product certification.

Why get IECEx certification for your products?

Product certification under the IECEx scheme aims to enable worldwide acceptance of one standard, one certificate and one mark. If you’re a manufacturer of equipment or product that is to be used or placed in a hazardous environment, obtaining certification under IECEx standards can help you if:

  • You’re looking to speed up and widen your international market access for new products or equipment.
  • You want to eliminate the need for duplicate testing in other countries. Countries that don’t participate in the IECEx system or require separate testing and certification usually also accept IECEx assessment reports.
  • You want to reduce testing and certification costs.
  • You want to assess your electrical equipment against standard IEC requirements. However, we recommend other options for highly specialized electrical equipment.
