Reducing Waste, Driving Change. The Path to Food Waste Zero Certification

12/02/2025

In a recent webinar led by Carla Debat, Sustainability Manager, and Gisela Lardino, Senior Sustainability Auditor, we explored key topics such as the importance of reducing and preventing food waste, the current legislative landscape, and the requirements and benefits of the Food Waste Zero Certification Scheme developed by Applus+ Certification.

This information is particularly relevant for managers, quality supervisors, technicians, consultants, food producers, processors, and distributors, among others.

    Context and Current Situation

Globally, approximately 1.3 billion tons of food are wasted each year, representing one-third of total production. This waste occurs at all stages of the value chain, from production to final consumption. The main causes include inefficiencies in harvesting, overproduction, inadequate transportation, damage during handling, and aesthetic standards that lead to the disposal of perfectly edible products.

    Circular Economy and Opportunities

We are transitioning from a linear economy to a circular economy, where waste becomes a resource. This shift presents several opportunities to implement sustainable practices such as regenerative agriculture, reusable or biodegradable packaging, and reverse logistics. It also highlights the importance of establishing local agreements for donating surplus food and creating flexible menus in the food service industry.

    Legislation and Requirements

The Waste and Contaminated Soils Law 7/2022 already includes aspects related to food waste, and a specific law on preventing food loss and waste is expected to be approved soon. This legislation aims to prevent and reduce losses throughout the food chain, promote the donation of surplus food, and encourage research and innovation in this area.

    Food Waste Zero Certification Scheme

The Food Waste Zero Certification Scheme by Applus+ Certification is based on a management system that includes a contextual analysis, organizational commitment, and a waste prevention plan. Companies must develop a process map, identify risks and opportunities, and set measurable objectives. Additionally, they must implement a data collection methodology and a results analysis process that ensures traceability, allowing verification during audits. The certification process includes annual audits and focuses on continuous improvement.

This certification validates that organizations are taking measures to minimize food waste, aligning with Law 7/2022 for a circular economy, promoting responsible resource utilization, reducing emissions, and contributing to sustainability.

    Benefits of Certification

Aligned with international best practices, this certification is designed to:

    • Help companies optimize their processes.
    • Enhance their reputation among consumers and demonstrate their commitment to sustainability.
    • Actively contribute to the fight against food waste.
    • Align with the Sustainable Development Goals, specifically Goal 2 (Zero Hunger) and Goal 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production).

    Conclusion

There is a clear need to take action to reduce food waste. By implementing sustainable practices and obtaining certification from Applus+ Certification, companies can make a significant contribution to a more sustainable future. Adopting initiatives such as this certification scheme ensures a structured approach to reducing food waste in business operations.
