Applus+ Laboratories strengthens its commitment to power electronics and renewable energies

21/01/2025

Our technology center in Barcelona has expanded its facilities with new capabilities to perform EMC and electrical safety tests on power electronics equipment up to 500 kW. This is enough power to ensure compliance with the national requirements of power grids worldwide.

This investment allows us to test products such as inverters, power converters, energy storage systems (ESS) or direct current (DC) electric vehicle chargers.

The new testing capabilities are in addition to the recent accreditation to certify power generation equipment and facilities according to the NTS requirements of the Spanish grid code, reinforcing Applus+ Laboratories' commitment to the renewable energy and power electronics sector.

EMC standards for this type of products require them to be tested in operation at different power levels, which vary depending on the product and can exceed 400 kW in DC chargers.

Thanks to these investments, Applus+ Laboratories will be the first laboratory in Spain and one of the few in Europe capable of testing the electromagnetic compatibility of this power equipment, without deviations from the standard and under ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation.

Applus+ Laboratories has a 10 m EMC chamber prepared to test large products and vehicles. This chamber is equipped with a 7-meter diameter turntable, easily exceeding the requirements of the EB charger standard, the most demanding one.

Advantages of testing in an accredited laboratory

The regulation allows manufacturers to make a self-declaration in order to obtain CE marking. Even so, testing in an independent laboratory with ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation offers guarantees of safety and traceability to the end customer. Having an accredited report facilitates access to public tenders, large customers and international markets.
