Lightship Security, an Applus+ Laboratories company and a leading cryptographic security test lab, announces its agreement with the OpenSSL Corporation to provide FIPS 140-3 validation services for the OpenSSL cryptographic library.

18/09/2024

The OpenSSL Corporation provides commercial support for users of the OpenSSL Library, a critical component of secure communications in enterprise technologies. As the world’s most widely used open-source cryptographic library, OpenSSL plays a vital role in securing digital communications.

Under this agreement, Lightship Security will be the primary lab for current and future FIPS 140-3 validations of the OpenSSL Library, a key requirement for the information and communications technology (ICT) community and OpenSSL users in various industries.
Additionally, Lightship Security will assist OpenSSL clients with rebrand validations. A FIPS 140-3 validation is mandatory and essential for vendors selling ICT products in the U.S., Canada, and other international markets. FIPS 140 has become a standard method for validating cryptographic technologies across multiple sectors, including healthcare (HIPAA) and the financial industry. Vendors wishing to rebrand any OpenSSL validated module can arrange it through their support agreement with the OpenSSL Corporation and rebrands will be powered by Lightship Security as the accredited test laboratory.

Jason Lawlor, President of Lightship Security, said:
“This agreement acknowledges Lightship Security's role as a leading provider of cryptographic product testing and certification. Being selected as the primary partner for ongoing and future validation efforts highlights our ability to stay at the forefront of validating critical technologies like OpenSSL and our commitment to delivering these services with excellence. Our expertise in developing innovative automated testing tools and processes allows us to provide our clients with top-tier certification experiences, leveraging our extensive experience in successfully completing FIPS 140 validations for a wide range of leading technology companies.”

Tim Hudson, President of the OpenSSL Corporation, said:
“At OpenSSL, we are committed to maintaining the highest standards of cryptographic security, and partnering with Lightship Security, as our primary partner for FIPS 140-3 validations, allows us to reinforce that commitment. Their expertise in FIPS 140-3 validations enables us to deliver robust, compliant solutions more efficiently, ensuring that OpenSSL continues to lead the way in securing critical technologies across industries worldwide. With Lightship’s innovative testing capabilities and proven track record, we are well-positioned to meet the growing demands of our user base.”
