As part of the agreement, KTR will expand its testing services to include relevant standards required to comply with the new cybersecurity requirements of the EU Radio Equipment Directive. On the other hand, Applus+ Laboratories will accept KTR test reports as proof of compliance when providing Notified Body services for the CE Marking of wireless and IoT devices.
A new regulatory framework for Wireless Devices in the EU
In 2022, the European Commission strengthened cybersecurity regulations for wireless products and systems by introducing a delegated act under the Radio Equipment Directive. This act will become mandatory starting from August 1, 2025.
The Delegated Act includes new cybersecurity requirements for wireless devices sold in the EU market, covering aspects such as network protection, personal data privacy, and fraud prevention. Notably, Applus+ Laboratories was one of the first Notified Bodies (NB) to expand its scope to incorporate these new requirements.
While harmonised standards have not yet been published, manufacturers aiming to stay ahead of the curve and enhance market competitiveness can already certify their cybersecurity products through accredited Notified Bodies like Applus+ Laboratories.
One effective approach for demonstrating compliance in front of the NB is evaluating products against existing standards with broad market acceptance, such as ETSI EN 303 645 for consumer IoT.
As part of the agreement, KTR will expand its accredited testing services to include those relevant cybersecurity standards.
An agreement to facilitate Korean vendors’ access to the EU market
In this context, the Memorandum of Understanding between Applus+ Laboratories and KTR holds significant potential. Korea is a major player in consumer electronics manufacturing, while the EU represents one of the largest markets for these types of products.
Korean vendors can now benefit from KTR’s local services for product testing, including cybersecurity compliance, with the assurance that their test reports will be recognised by Applus+ Laboratories.
As a Notified Body, Applus+ Laboratories can certify wireless devices against the comprehensive requirements of the Radio Equipment Directive (RED) even before the new cybersecurity requirements become mandatory.
