On the 5th and 6th of November, Applus+ will once again be organising a training workshop for tunnel control room operators with practical exercises and simulations using real fire in the TST testing tunnel. Operators can gain personal Applus+ certification, which provides them with a record of their technical competence in fire management.
The two-day course is a unique programme which combines theoretical training about the progression of fire and smoke in tunnels with practical training in real fire situations.
Specifically, participants will be able to experience a test fire in a tunnel first hand and see its behaviour both from the control room, where they will be able to monitor the development of the smoke, as well as inside the tunnel, where practical evacuation exercises will take place.
After this, a second exercise will be carried out from inside the tunnel, this time with white smoke. Participants will observe its behaviour and receive practical training on extinguishing real fire.
When the training has been completed, the operators will be evaluated by an independent certification committee, which will assess their ability and performance during the course. If they successfully pass the evaluation, the operators can receive an accreditation booklet which will certify their technical competence in fire management. This personal certification is valid for ten years, but must be renewed after five years in order to maintain it.
For companies which manage infrastructure, having certified staff with experience in fire management allows them to improve the level of safety in the tunnel in case of fire and evacuation. It also adds value and gives confidence to users, decision makers and public authorities.
The certification is specifically targeted at control room operators and people responsible for safety and emergencies in tunnels. Nevertheless, it could also be interesting for other professionals involved in the design and safety of infrastructure, such as engineers and consultants, public administration staff or insurance companies.
