GlobalPlatform has developed new specifications to test eUICC remote provisioning and multiple Mobile Network Operators management
The eSIM, key for M2M market expansion
The GSMA Embedded UICC, also known as eSIM or eUICC, is a secure element plugged into or soldered within a smart device and capable of managing multiple mobile network operators (MNO) via remote provisioning.
GSMA is promoting the eSIM solution as a key step to developing
Machine to Machine (M2M) connectivity. The M2M market includes a wide variety of connected machines that will be marketed globally and might move between countries. In some of those devices the SIM would not be easily accessible or might need to be soldered.
The currently non-reprogrammable SIM card used in handsets is not seen as a viable option for the M2M connectivity ecosystem. In contrast, GSMA eSIM will be able to remotely provision an initial operator subscription and swap from one MNO to another if necessary without user intervention.
GlobalPlatform is acting on behalf of GSMA, issuing test specifications and managing eUICC product compliance. The test program validates eUICC interfaces compliance and functionalities such as remote provisioning and multiple MNO management.
By establishing a qualification program for eUICC products, GSMA is supporting expansion in the M2M market, while ensuring product interoperability and robustness, and a better end-user experience.
