eUICC or eSIM are SIM cards embedded in connected devices that allow to remotely configure the subscription to a telecommunications operator. Our laboratories validate the functionality of these eSIM and their conformity with the specifications defined by GSMA.
Applus+ Laboratories has expanded its GlobalPlatform (GP) qualification to carry out eUICC functional testing, for both Consumer (SGP.24 RSP) and M2M (SGP.16 RSP) devices. The purpose of these tests is to validate the remote provisioning functionality of eSIM in line with the specifications defined by GSMA.
eSIM and Remote Provisioning
eUICC are device-embedded SIM cards that allow for “over the air” provisioning of the first subscription to a telecommunications operator, as well as subsequent subscription changes from one operator to another.
Unlike traditional SIM cards, this solution avoids having to physically change the card; therefore, a common ecosystem for eSIM manufacturers and operators is essential. GSMA conformity programmes are a framework in which the different requirements for an eUICC to enter the RSP (Remote SIM provisioning) ecosystem are defined, for both Consumer and M2M devices.
M2M (machine-to-machine) eUICC are solutions intended for mobile connections made by any type of machine, such as smart meters, intelligent vehicles, traffic lights or surveillance systems, among others. CD (Customer Device) eUICC are an equivalent solution for private use products such as mobile phones, tablets, laptops or wearables.
Applus+ services for eUICC in partnership with COMPRION
GlobalPlatform is the entity appointed by GSMA to manage eUICC functional certification programmes. With this new qualification, Applus+ Laboratories will be able to conduct the following functional tests:
Our laboratory has obtained these qualifications in very close cooperation with COMPRION GmbH, a leading provider of test solutions that develops the tools required to perform the qualified test services. “The current collaboration strengthens Applus+ Laboratories by building a partnership with long expertise in developing eSIM testing tools”, said Josepmaria ROCA, Director IT Labs Area, of Applus+ Laboratories.
“This synergy with Applus+ on GlobalPlatform eUICC test suites will greatly simplify market introduction for card manufacturers equipped with a COMPRION tester when submitting their eUICC for the GlobalPlatform validation in the lab” says Eric LAFFONT, COMPRION EMEA Sales Manager.
The expansion of the qualification also reinforces the position of Applus+ as testing partner for eUICC developers. Applus+ is an accredited laboratory capable of carrying out eSIM security evaluations as defined by GSMA in its compliance programmes and is now also qualified to conduct functional tests on these products.
